This set of 3 drop spindles by Louet makes a nice gift set for someone who wants to try hand spinning. The drop spindle is a simple tool for spinning wool. It is a very manual and slower method of spinning but is still used today by many cultures in South America and Asia, and by fiber craft artists who wish to experience more traditional / historical methods of spinning.
- The Top drop spindle has weight or whirl to help with the spinning motion and a hook on the short side of the shaft, closest to the weight. The weight is on top during spinning. Yarn goes through the hook, around the weight and collects on the shaft after the spinner wraps the spun yarn.
- The Bottom drop spindle also has weight or whirl to help with the spinning motion and a hook on the long end of the shaft. The hook is on top weight is on the bottom during spinning. The point can be used to spin the spindle on the floor or on a table. Yarn goes through the hook, and collects on the shaft after the spinner wraps the spun yarn.
- The Octo drop spindle has lighter weight or whirl to help with the spinning motion and a hook on the short side of the shaft, closest to the weight. The weight is on top during spinning. Yarn goes through the hook, around the weight and collects on the shaft after the spinner wraps the spun yarn.
Each spindle is made of unfinished beech. Conventional drop spindles weigh approximately 80g, while the octo spindle weighs approximately 40g.
